The once proud ruler of the family, Abd al-Gawwad, aged and tamed by illness, follows the hustle and bustle in the streets in front of his palace. The good old days are gone for him and the children have long since grown up: Chadiga lives happily married on Sugar Street; Aisha lost her husband and sons to typhus; Yasin feels safe with his former mistress, while Kamal seeks to soothe his suffering in the arms of a prostitute.
When the Second World War reaches Egypt, a difficult time begins for Abd al-Gawwad’s family, which becomes a breaking point.
