Brought to France from Algeria in 1981 by a husband she has only just married, and didnt know before, Yamina Taleb has made a home in the suburbs of Paris, despite the odds, and dedicated her life to her four children. As her children battle to find a way to be French, Yaminas prior life in Algeria is all but erased. This novel gives it back to her, alternating fragments from her Algerian past with those of her Paris present, and celebrating a mother so often unseen and unheard. This is a funny, angry and tender, and a joy to read.
