Two young Sudanese men, Ibrahim and Shikiri, are dragged off the bus on the way to Khartoum and drafted into military service. Their area of operation: the province of Darfur, where the government is engaged in a bitter civil war with rebel groups. The soldiers are supported by the Djandjawid, a mercenary force that acts with extreme brutality against the civilian population. As the story progresses, Shikiri meets a young woman who has lost everything because of the Djandjawid and is ready for anything – including marrying Shikiri if he helps her in her campaign of revenge against the Djandjawid. An odyssey of these three begins through different battle areas, to both warring parties, through episodes of Sudanese history. But there is someone else who thwarts the plans of all parties and people: the so-called Messiah of Darfur, who preaches like Jesus, works miracles and finds more and more followers. Can he bring salvation to this hopeless situation? In this multi-layered novel, Baraka Sakin authentically describes the torn state of Sudan and gives the reader insight into the mechanisms of similar conflicts. But it is also a moving story about war and adventure, love and revenge, faith and magic. A novel characterized by humor and great humanity.
